We're unique, just like everybody else

>> 10.13.2010

We are, in many ways, very much like a gazillion other families living in these United States.  Mid-thirties, married 11 years, middle class, shower regularly, three beautiful sons.  We drive a mini-van........because it's the law. So what could a couple regular Joes like us have to say that anyone cares about?  Well, we have a couple unique characteristics that separate us from the other Joes.  First and foremost, we have kids with food allergies and food sensitivities.  That's pretty common, right?

Well, we received our degree in food sensitivity in a little school called the University of Hard Knocks and our instructor was a baby named Gabe.  School lasted for two years.  Classes began every night at about 9 pm and lasted till dawn.  That, my friend, is what they call a "game changer".  We read every bloody thing we could about food allergies and sensitivities.  Bottom line: if Gabe's tummy hurts, nighttime becomes a sad time for all parties involved.  Turns out, only about half of it was food-related because loving on Gabe is still like cuddling with a badger.  The experience with our second born sent us further down the road toward seeking the best options for feeding, medicating (or not medicating usually), vaccinating, and generally raising a youngster in this kooky place we call planet Earth.

Other items we have going for us:  Katrina grew up vegetarian and had one of those moms that ground their own flour and they ate things like dates and kale instead of McDonald's.  (I ate pot-roast and was "husky" for a period in my youth).  My father-in-law is a Dr. of Osteopathy, with a penchant for long descriptions of medical conditions.  (I am a sponge for this stuff because you never know when you're going to have to perform a battlefield vasectomy.)   Also, I am an "environmental scientist" (whatever that means) and have worked over the years on jobs involving mold, indoor air, drinking water, chemical exposure and Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.  I try to refrain from elaborating on my job if at all possible as it is rarely well received.

We have discovered nothing new during our reading and struggling ("there is nothing new under the sun"), but our hope for this venture is to be "just a beggar showing another beggar where to find bread".

So, please, read with the knowledge that our intent is not to convince the world to agree with us in all things, but to save someone else from struggling in the same way we have.
